Assessment In Australia

In Australia the children are tested at the end of the term just like children in the U.S.  Their grading system is different but the system is very similar to the U.S

A student will complete the assessment requirements for all relevant units no later than the end of the examination period for the relevant study period.
6.3.2 Result grades
6.3.2.1 Unit grading codes

All units will be assessed and recorded according to the codes listed in Table 1. Where a student cannot be awarded a final grade for a unit at the end of the study period, the grade will remain blank. If no final result grade has been assigned to the unit within twelve months of the end of the study period, the blank grade will be converted to Fail

I feel that children should not be tested at the end of the year because it puts a lot of pressure on the students.  Just because the students fail the test does not mean that they are not as smart as the others.  Some students are not good at test taking.  I really believed that our education system needs to be designed where children to be assessed.

  1. Lavonda,

I agree about the stress of tests. I have recently had school age children crying at school because they were nervous about tests weeks in advance. I like using test as a judge to determine if the school and teachers are doing their job,but feel as a result of the students performance should not be used.

  2. Lavonda,

I too agree. Today the focus is on teacher accountability, however this often results in students being taught the test. It is my personal belief that in early childhood students should be assessed on their progress holistically. In this case, the term assessment means the ability for teachers to observe students using a rubric to determine progress. This along with evidence of work samples provides just as much evidence into the progress of a child as a standardized assessment does.

  3. Lavonda,

I agree with you, children should not be tested at the end of the year to determine how well they are performing. This is a little bit too much for a child to endure at one time.
